In an article on Healthline, Dr. Boxer continued stating that "I was seeing a tremendous amount of people coming in just with nausea, vomiting, and feelings of fullness, early satiety, just not feeling well … Universally these patients were on GLP-1’s." 

Despite this, Novo Nordisk, the producer of Ozempic, has denied that the medication is unsafe, as more cases are being reported.

A woman in Canada who was proscribed Ozempic for her type 2 diabetes and who had no previous mental health issues, became suicidal after taking Ozempic. "I didn’t have any mental health issues when I started Ozempic — and then the suicidal ideation just kind of came out of nowhere a couple months after starting it[.]  After going back onto social media, she discovered others who claimed they too experienced anxiety, depression, and suicidal ideation after starting Ozempic. 

The European Medicines Agency has officially opened an investigation of Ozempic, Saxenda, and Wegovey after numerous patients reported the drugs caused thoughts of suicide and self-harm. Two weeks later, the UK’s Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency (MHPRA) said it would be reviewing safety data on the class of GLP-a receptor agonists, including Ozempic. Wegovy and Saxenda.  The MHRA said that between 2020 and July 5, 2023 it had received five adverse reports “involving semaglutide” and associated with “suicidal and self-injurious behavior.” Between 2010 and July 6, 2023, they received 12 adverse drug reactions “involving liraglutide” and associated with “suicidal and self-injurious behavior.”

The FDA requires that any medication for weight loss that acts on the central nervous system carry a warning about suicidal thoughts.  Ozempic, which is only approved for diabetes does not carry such a warning.  However, while ​Novo Nordisk does not warn of any mental health side effects, the Mayo Clinic certainly does stating that "This medicine may cause some people to be agitated, irritable, or display other abnormal behaviors. It may also cause some people to have suicidal thoughts and tendencies or to become more depressed." (empasis added").

The FDA's adverse event reporting system (FAERS) received 190 reports of depression and suicide-related mental illnesses connected to Ozempic.  It received 84 reports for Saxenda and 26 for Wegovy. Dr. Gregory Dodell of Central Park Endocrinology expressed that patients on these medications that suppress their appetite may not be getting sufficient nutrients, which in turn disrupts their mental stability.  While severely restricting one's caloric intake can cause a host of problems, one problem is that your suppressed appetite can come back full-force after being quite for so long through the ghrelin hormone which increases a person's appetite.
